Functional Brain Mapping and Brain Computer Interface Lab
About the Functional Brain Mapping and Brain Computer Interface Lab (FBM-BCI)
Founded in August 2011, the main goal of the FBM-BCI Lab is to assist the comprehensive epilepsy surgery program and improve outcomes of epilepsy surgery. We are focusing on implementing brain imaging techniques to investigate cognitive, sensory, and motor function in epilepsy patients. From clinical side, we are closely working with the Comprehensive Pediatric Epilepsy Center at Florida Hospital for Children directed by Dr. Ki Lee, MD. From research side, we are greatly supported by the Center for Pediatric Research at Florida Hospital for Children directed by Dr. Patricia Robinson, PhD, CPNP.

Collaborators
Dr. Gerwin Schalk, PhD and Peter Brunner from Albany Medical School, NY – collaborating on real-time functional mapping (RTFM) for epilepsy surgery candidates;
Dr. Wei Wang, PhD from University of Pittsburgh, IL – collaborating on brain-computer interface (BCI) project in patients undergoing hemispherectomy;
Dr. Anca Ralescu, PhD from Computer Science Department, School of Computing Sciences and Informatics, College of Engineering, University of Cincinnati, OH – collaborating on applying machine learning techniques for neurophysiological/imaging data analysis;
Dr. Scott Holland, PhD from Pediatric Neuroimaging Research Consortium, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, OH. We are grateful to Dr. Holland and his team for sharing with us fMRI paradigms for evaluation of language function in children.

Research Opportunities
Functional Brain Mapping and Brain Computer Interface Lab offers a number of unique opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students to conduct research in the field of epilepsy research and its application to brain-computer interaction. Students will be trained in brain imaging techniques, work in clinical settings, and will be provided with opportunity to work on the scientific presentations and manuscripts.
