For Parents

Welcome to Healthy 100 Kids at Florida Hospital for Children, a comprehensive pediatric wellness initiative with the goal of giving kids the best chance of living to a healthy 100. It approaches each aspect of physical and mental wellbeing, not only for children and teens, but also for the family unit when household support is needed to affect change. Here you will find valuable information, tools and resources to help your child live a longer, healthier and happier life!

As a parent, we understand that your child’s health is your top priority. From ensuring good hand washing techniques to scheduling regular checkups, you work hard to maintain the health of your family. You encourage your children to make good lifestyle choices and set them on a course for healthy growth and development. But what happens if your child meanders off course and is faced with extra weight during his or her formative years?

As part of Healthy 100 Kids, Florida Hospital for Children launched an initiative specifically geared to the treatment and prevention of childhood obesity. In the last thirty years, the number of children in the United States who are considered overweight or obese has doubled, from 15 percent in the 1970s to nearly 30 percent today. It is a critical issue and we are committed to being part of the solution.

In addition to the weight itself, it is often the resulting conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, asthma, heart disease and lowered self-esteem that leave the family and child in distress and ready to take action. You may be wondering how your child and family can overcome these challenges – especially if you have also faced weight management or balanced lifestyle issues yourself. Genetic predisposition is only part of the story; and more often than not, it can be overcome through food and exercise with the right plan and support in place. It is important to know that there is hope, even if your family has tried other diets and fitness regimens in the past without long-term success. Moreover, healthy living is much more than food and exercise; it is finding harmony with the mind, body and spirit.

The Florida Hospital for Children difference is a holistic lifestyle and weight management initiative that approaches each aspect of physical and mental wellbeing, not only for your child, but also for your family unit. It’s far more than simply giving you the knowledge to effect change, it’s an entire team dedicated to helping you take action! Our physicians, clinicians and medical staff will tailor a program with the goal of giving your child the best chance of living to a healthy 100. The interconnectivity between nutrition, fitness, relaxation, relationships and body image will lay the foundation for new household habits. While there may be short-term incremental goals, we offer all participants long-term support and encouragement through a variety of means because we know that “staying healthy” is a lifetime commitment.

Who is involved?

The Healthy 100 Kids medical team is made up of a physician specialist, nutritionist, exercise specialist and psychologist in addition to support staff. This core team will assess your child’s individual circumstances to custom tailor a treatment program. In order to increase its effectiveness, the program will not only focus on your child, but also you, as parents. After all, healthy parents and healthy children go hand in hand. You have the most impact over your child and can either be a proponent of change or a barricade to success. We believe that our comprehensive treatment and support team will help rid you of the barricade standing in the way of becoming a healthy balanced family! We will accomplish this together and support you all the way.

What should we expect?

Now that you are here, you’ve made the first step in confronting and treating the threat of obesity and its related life-shortening problems. Your interest in establishing healthy habits will not only lead to a positive shift in your family’s health, but could, in effect, promote life saving changes with regard to many weight-caused illnesses.

When you are ready to seek help at Florida Hospital for Children, you and your child will go through the following process:

Initial Medical Assessment

Medical exam and laboratory testing

  • Meetings with physician, nutritionist and psychologist for comprehensive health assessment
  • Assignment of health coach and development of class schedule

Education and Activity Program

The education and activity program is facilitated in group and individual settings followed by six months of weekly engagements with health coaches to set and track goals. This will be done in a variety of ways including online, by telephone and in-person. As each milestone is completed, the next treatment option will be developed.

Your child’s success largely depends on the entire household becoming a healthy balanced family. For this reason, treating your child also means treating his or her parents. Education-based activity sessions will include:

Balanced Healthy Living 101 For Parents

  • Role of food in family
  • Importance of exercise
  • Supporting positive body image
  • Rest and Relaxation

Balanced Healthy Living 101 For Kids & Teens

  • Healthy eating
  • Creative ways to use energy
  • Accepting my body
  • Rest and Relaxation

Healthy Household Family Sessions

  • Family Meals
  • Family Fun (Activity sessions)
  • Cooking together

When the initial program is completed, your family will have prepared the foundation for healthy living. For your child, this means weight loss, improved fitness, improved self-esteem and a significant reduction of life-threatening conditions. For you, it also means improved fitness, knowledge of good nutrition and an overall better relationship with your family. To help you on the way to a Healthy 100, is a follow up component.

Health Coaching and Monitoring

A member of the team will have weekly contact with both the child and family to review goals and progress.

Long Term Follow Up

There will be a follow up assessment every three months and a medical assessment every six months. To keep your child engaged and motivated, we will periodically reevaluate progress and goals. We will also modify the program to maintain progress.

Community Involvement

The goal is to team each child and family up with another community partner for activity and engagement. We are currently working with YMCA, Track Shack, Girl Scouts and the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation.

Families that work together to achieve this goal will reap the rewards for a lifetime.
