The Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children has a dedicated neurosurgical suite with accurate precision operating rooms equipped with state-of-the-art neuro-navigation technology (computer-assisted technologies used by neurosurgeons to guide or "navigate” within the confines of the skull or vertebral column during surgery). The surgical suite is staffed with a highly-experienced team, including a full-time pediatric anesthesia team. Pediatric neurosurgeons are practicing leading edge, minimally invasive endoscopic techniques to remove skull-base tumors through the nasal canal, behind the ear, and above the eye. They are also performing minimally invasive spine surgeries to treat fractures in the spine.

A new standard in pediatric neurosurgery

Our new surgical suites set the standard for advanced surgery and exceptional patient care. The operating rooms feature intraoperative 3-Tesla MRI and 40-Slice CT capabilities that can produce live three-dimensional image feeds during surgery so surgeons can monitor their progress during a procedure. It is the most precise surgical intervention in the world and our hospital is the only one in the Southeastern region of the U.S. to have it. When combined with intraoperative lasers, the GPS-like neuro-navigation systems and high-definition optical devices,  our surgeons have the best tools in the country to address neurological diseases in our young patients.

Our neurosurgeons have expertise in treating:

  • Brain and Spinal Injury
  • Brain and Spinal Tumors
  • Cerebrosvascular disease
  • Chiari Malformations
  • Craniofacial Disorders
  • Epilepsy Surgery
  • Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus
  • Pituitary Surgery
  • Spasticity
  • Spina Bifida/Congenital Spinal Anomalies
  • Spinal Disorders (minimally invasive and complex surgeries)
  • Skull base surgery (minimally invasive and invasive)
  • Syringomyelia
  • Vagus Nerve Stimulation
  • Vascular Anomalies of the Brain

Based on your child’s particular needs, and to ensure the best outcomes possible, neurology and neurosurgery treatments may be part of a multidisciplinary approach that also includes care in craniofacial, plagiocephaly, neuro-oncology, neurofibromatosis or one of our other specialty programs.

Experience Matters

Each year, hundreds of neurosurgeries and neuromedical procedures are performed at the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children. Without question, experience matters when it comes to any medical procedure, especially when it involves children. We offer a highly professional medical team that has the knowledge and experience you want when your child is ill. We are early adopters, and often times the innovators, of advanced treatments where we utilize leading edge equipment, techniques and care.

This dedication to excellence in patient care has led us into new specialty areas, such as being the first hospital in the nation to have a Director of Congenital Neurosurgery. We were also the first in the state to introduce the Leksell Gamma Knife© 4C, specifically for the treatment of pediatric patients with complex neurological disorders. We remain the only facility in Central Florida using Gamma Knife treatment – offering new hope to children with brain tumors, vascular malformations and functional disorders. In addition to advanced neuroscience technologies such as Stealth Surgical Navigation System, Gamma Knife®, 3-Tesla MRI and image-guided radiation therapy, we will be adding an intra-operative MRI in the near future that will allow the surgeon to operate on a child’s still developing brain or spinal cord using three-dimensional, real-time imaging.
